About Deer Isle 6.0
"A cold island off the coast. Half abandoned, half waiting for you to make a mistake."
Overview
Deer Isle is a community made terrain mod for DayZ, created and maintained by JohnMcLane. First released on the Steam Workshop on December 25, 2018, the map is loosely based on the real Deer Isle in Maine, USA, and spans roughly 16 km × 16 km.
The current development folder for the map weighs in at around 28 GB, with over 1.5 million objects hand placed across the terrain. CF is required as a dependency.
The Setting
Deer Isle is an isolated island terrain that replaces the official Chernarus and Livonia maps. You'll find a mix of biomes packed into one landmass: pine forests, mountain ranges, lakes, coastal cliffs, harbors, farmland, small towns, and a handful of isolated islets off the coast.
Many real world references are baked into the map: Paris Island, the large western military zone, draws its name and layout from the real Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in South Carolina, and the Deer Isle Airfield is modeled on Knox County Regional Airport in Maine.
What's New in 6.0
Version 6.0 is described by JohnMcLane as "The Unofficial 1.0", a milestone release that the author considers the project's true full version, regardless of the number on the box.
Server version Northbound currently runs the 6.0 Experimental build of Deer Isle. As soon as the stable 6.0 release ships, the server will be wiped and updated to that version. Plan storage and base investments accordingly. For the canonical changelog, see the Steam Workshop page or the Deer Isle Discord.
Notable Areas
- Paris Island: the large western military area. high tier loot, high traffic, modeled after the real Marine Corps base in South Carolina.
- Mt. Katahdin / KMUC: a massive underground bunker complex built into the mountain. Easy to get lost in, easy to die in.
- Deer Isle Airfield: the island's main airport, modeled on Knox County Regional in Maine. Military and aviation loot, exposed approaches.
- Alcatraz: an isolated island landmark with a distinctive prison style complex, surrounded by water.
- The Crater: a notable geological feature in the southeast, marked by a central tower structure.
- Bunkers & Cave Systems: bunkers, deep caves, and concealed tunnels are scattered across the island, often hidden in dense forest. Search well and you'll be rewarded.
Unique Content
- Custom underground bunker complexes and cave networks built into the terrain.
- A diving mod that opens up underwater exploration around the island.
- Map specific weapons and gear, including the S.T.A.G. clothing series.
- Hidden POIs scattered through forests and remote terrain. The map rewards players who explore off the road.
Survival Notes
- The ingame map (M) is not available by default on Northbound. You must find a Deer Isle map in the world. Until then, navigate by landmarks.
- Cold and weather are real threats. Pack accordingly before crossing the interior.
- Roads are convenient and visible. Convenient and visible is also how ambushes work.
- The island rewards exploration. Caves, bunkers, and small camps are easy to walk past if you stick to the obvious routes.
